| Description | In 1897, Benson Library, often referred to as Benson #1, was completed and made possible by a gift of $1, 600.00 from Miss Mary Benson of Brooklyn, New York. Also, a gift of $1, 000.00 from Emmanuel Church in Boston, MA to the library at Saint Augustine's College was received. On March 18, 1898, Benson #1 was dedicated by the Right Reverend Joseph B. Cheshire, Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina. The growth of the book collection increased from 3, 000 books in 1910 to 8, 389 books in 1928. The Benson Library was recognized by the United States Office of Education as one of 140 official information centers during World War II. |
