About the Collection

The HBCU Digtal Collection provides electronic access to the archives and special collections of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. This unique collectin of digital images opens the door to the treasures of HBCUs that have a special and historic legacy in the education of Black Americans. The digital library will foster research and teaching opportunities for scholars in fields of African American Studies, the American South, American Democracy, cultural pluralism and in other related academic disciplines.

This historic collection is the product of a partnership between the HBCU Library Alliance, Cornell University Library, HBCU institutions, and the Southeastern Library Network. It is intended to highlight the contributions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities to American history, while encouraging scholarship and a broader collaboration between HBCU libraries and other organizations. The HBCU Digital Collection promotes access to previously unknown artifacts that have helped to preserve the cultural heritage of these institutions that were founded in the midst of struggle with a special mission to education former slaves and free Blacks. The dual role of HBCU libraries is also promoted as caretakers in preserving the integrity of these collections and as centers of learning with shared missions to educate the masses of African-American within their walls. The collection is indeed valuable in enhancing the visibility of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, their challenges and their outstanding educational legacy that has preserved the rich history and culture of African Americans. Goals of the HBCU Digital Library:

  • Promote the mission of each university.
  • Preserve the history and culture of the insitutions and community.
  • Provide access to valuable collections held by HBCU libraries and archives.
  • Promote networking, collaboration, and sharing among HBCUs.

This website contains collections of historical materials belonging to the HBCU Library Alliance member institutions (hereafter referred to as contributing partners).

The HBCU Library Alliance is providing access to this website and to materials in the holdings of its contributing partners. The material in this collection does not, and is not meant to, represent all material available on historically black college and university history. You are encouraged to contact individual contributing partners for more information on their holdings as well as other sources.

The material in this collection is provided as an informational service only. The HBCU Library Alliance makes no claims, promises, or guarantees about the timeliness, accuracy, completeness, or adequacy of the information contained in or linked to in this website. CREDITS

You must credit the HBCU Library Alliance and the contributing partner in connection with any use of any image or other materials found on the website. A credit line referencing the HBCU Library Alliance and the contributing partner must appear directly beneath a published or reproduced image (i.e. Levi Watkins Learning Center at the Alabama State University in cooperation with the HBCU Library Alliance). For video and television, such credit must appear in the section devoted to acknowledgements. The proper citation for each image may be found on the bibliographic view page in the cataloging record. OBTAINING COPIES & PERMISSIONS

Copies of some digital images are for sale as prints or for publication through our contributing partners. Information regarding the institution that contributed the document can be found on the page "Browse Collections by Institution" and/or with the cataloging information for each image.

Copy prints are intended for personal use only, such as for framing and displaying on a wall. Copy prints may not be reproduced or distributed in any form. If you want to use an image for commercial uses, publication, or any use other than personal use, you must license a digital file. You may be asked to provide a copy of the publication in which the image appears to the contributing partner.

Websites are a form of publication and hence, you must obtain permission before you can use any image or other material on your site. If the material is for web use, a link to the contributing partner or its address shall appear in the appropriate part of the website.

Please contact the contributing partner’s reproduction and permissions coordinator to obtain copies and/or additional information about the image you plan to obtain. Permission for commercial use, publication, manipulation, display or distribution or website use must be obtained prior to use by contacting the reproduction and permissions coordinators listed at "Browse Collections by Institution".
